New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara has agreed to a lesser charge in the Las Vegas nightclub case, authorities said Tuesday.
Kamara pled no contest to a misdemeanor charge of breach of peace, which removes the possibility of criminal charges concerning him. Most importantly, it means he avoids jail time.
For Kamara, the misdemeanor means that he will have to do community service and pay $100,000 toward the victim’s medical bills.
Kamara and two of his companions were apprehended by police on Feb. 6, 2022, following his appearance in an NFL Pro Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Video footage shows an altercation between a man and a group of men, one of which was Kamara.
The Saints running back told police that he struck a man after he thought he had done something to someone in his group and was trying to run away.
With the removal of felony charges, Kamara may be free to suit up for the Saints upcoming season, although there is still the possibility of a fine from the league as well as the team.
The Saints are looking forward to a retooled offense with Derek Carr as the quarterback. Kamara will be the starting running back, although the Saints will likely rely on a running-back-by-committee approach to take advantage of the younger backs they’ve acquired in the offseason.
