In the aftermath of a tragic New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street, the scheduled Sugar Bowl matchup between No. 2 Georgia and No. 7 Notre Dame has been postponed.
Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley explained the decision to delay the game, saying, “We have been in consultation with ESPN, the College Football Playoff, the Southeastern Conference, the University of Georgia, Notre Dame, and all relevant parties. Everyone agrees that postponing the game for 24 hours is in the best interest of public safety.”
When Will The 2025 Sugar Bowl Be Played?
The College Football Playoff quarterfinal game will now take place on Thursday, January 2, at 8:45 p.m. ET at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
The attack occurred early on New Year’s Day when a man intentionally drove a pickup truck through barricades and into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter around 3:15 a.m. local time. The incident, which took place during the waning hours of New Year’s Eve celebrations, resulted in 35 people being hospitalized. Authorities confirmed that the driver is deceased.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated, “This individual was attempting to harm as many people as possible.” Kirkpatrick also noted that two police officers were struck by gunfire during the incident but are in stable condition.
In response to the attack, portions of Bourbon Street have been closed from Canal Street to St. Anne Street. Kirkpatrick urged the public to remain cautious while emphasizing, “There’s so much to enjoy about New Orleans. While we deal with this tragedy, we want everyone to stay safe and avoid the affected areas of Bourbon Street.”
The FBI announced it is investigating the incident as a terrorist act. Officials and local law enforcement are working to ensure the safety of the Superdome and surrounding areas ahead of the rescheduled Sugar Bowl game.
